In an interview with the Australian Women's Weekly, Anna Murdoch Mann said the Rupert Murdoch she knew and loved "died a long time ago". She said he sabotaged their happy marriage by having an affair with his translator, Wendi Deng, whom he has since married. Mr Murdoch had asserted that his liaison with Ms Deng began after the marriage ended.
Ms Murdoch Mann said she deplored the battle between her children for succession at News Corp. "There's been such a lot of pressure that they needn't have had at their age." Asked which one she thought would be best suited to take the top job, she replied: "Actually, I'd like none of them to."
The Murdoch's oldest child, Elisabeth, 32, appeared to take herself out of the running for control of News Corp last year when she quit her job running BSkyB. But the competition between Lachlan, 30, and James, 28, for control of the $39bn (£27bn) empire, is as fierce as ever. Ms Murdoch Mann's ties to the companies were almost

Peter Mandelson's two previous spells in the Cabinet both ended with him reluctantly penning a resignation letter to Tony Blair and leaving Downing Street under a dark cloud.

In his first incarnation, as Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, he lasted less than five months in 1998.
He was undone on that occasion by the revelation that he had bought a fashionable home in Notting Hill, with the help of an interest-free £373,000 loan from his millionaire ministerial colleague Geoffrey Robinson.
When Mr Mandelson filled in a Britannia Building Society mortgage form to buy the house in 1996 he had failed to mention the loan. Nor did it appear on his entry in the Commons Register of Interests.
After joining the Cabinet he also did not bring the loan to the attention of his Permanent Secretary, even though Mr Robinson's business links were at that time under investigation by Mr Mandelson's own department.
Tony Blair had vowed that his Government, in contrast to the Conservatives, would be "whiter than white" and Mr Mandelson had to go.

Murdoch absolved from Model mistake

Absolved: Top Model host Sarah Murdoch. (Youtube: ABC News)

A producer of Australia's Next Top Model - not host Sarah Murdoch - is to blame for the wrong contestant being named as the show's winner, Foxtel and production company Granada say.
In a statement, the two companies say they have conducted an investigation and taken responsibility for the bungle.
"It has been confirmed that it was human error and not a technical glitch which caused the incident," the statement said.
The statement came three days after the embarrassing gaffe in which Murdoch announced Kelsey Martinovich, 19, as the winner during the live finale.
Moments later Murdoch had to correct herself - the actual winner was 18-year-old Gold Coast contestant Amanda Ware.
The normally poised TV personality and wife of media investor Lachlan Murdoch appeared close to tears when she realised the massive mistake.
Earlier this week, Murdoch told A Current Affair that the mistake occurred when she was forced to go with earlier information because of technical difficulties during the announcement.
But Foxtel's executive director of television, Brian Walsh, says inquiries have revealed that neither Murdoch nor technical problems were the reason for the error.
"We have confirmed that the fault was a human communications error to the host Sarah Murdoch and that an assumption had been made by the producer which has now shown to be incorrect," he said.
Walsh says allegations that it was a publicity stunt were also unfounded.
"Live television can be unpredictable and people can be forgiven for making a mistake," he said.
"What isn't acceptable, though, is any suggestion that the host, Sarah Murdoch, was at fault or that this was a publicity stunt.
"Nothing could be further from the truth and we apologise to Sarah for any embarrassment it and the subsequent publicity has caused her."
He says Foxtel had also apologised to Ware and Martinovich.
Granada Productions managing director Leonie Lowe says the person responsible for the error had "conceded the mistake" and personally apologised to Murdoch.
"The show's finale was a flawless piece of television up until that last moment when one producer simply got it wrong," she said.

Following the death of her father in March 1992, Mrs Rinehart became Executive Chairman of HPPL and the HPPL Group of companies. She commenced an acrimonious legal fight in 1992 with her stepmother, Rose Porteous, over the circumstances of her father's death and control of the Hancock assets. The court cases and negotiations ultimately took 14 years to settle.[6]
In 1999 her proposal to name a mountain range after her family to commemorate its contribution in establishing the pastoral and mining industry in the Pilbara region was approved. The so-named Hancock Range is situated about 65 km north-west of the town of Newman.[7]
In 2010 Rinehart departed from her normally private persona to join a campaign with Andrew Forrest and others against the Federal Government's proposed Mineral Resource Rent Tax. Soon afterwards she took a 10% stake in Network Ten; James Packer had acquired an 18% stake in the same company soon before. Since then she has also acquired a substantial stake in Fairfax Media. This foray into media ownership is a major change from previous corporate activities.[8]
Recent years have seen her rapidly developing Hancock's undeveloped deposits and turning them into operating mines.[3] As of 2010 her daughter Bianca Rinehart was a member of the executive management team and a director of several Hancock companies and appeared to be being groomed for succession after her mother.[9]

There is speculation Ms Rinehart's purchase  is behind strong trading in Fairfax shares this week

AUSTRALIA'S richest woman, Gina Rinehart, has expanded her portfolio of media investments to include Fairfax a day after the newspaper, digital and radio group replaced its chief executive.
It is believed Ms Rinehart is behind strong trading in Fairfax shares this week through the same private client broker - Morgan Stanley Smith Barney - that the iron ore magnate used to build a 10 per cent stake in Ten Network Holdings last month, reported The Australian.
Market sources said she had bought a little under two per cent of the company and was likely to increase her stake in coming days.
Ms Rinehart splurged $150 million on her Ten shareholding weeks after fellow billionaire James Packer shook up the television group by becoming a substantial shareholder.

She has chosen a similarly interesting time to buy into the publisher of the The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review.
Fairfax chairman Roger Corbett announced on Monday that chief executive Brian McCarthy had stood down because he was unable to guarantee "the commitment and energy required to drive the performance of the business over the next three to five years".

Mr McCarthy was replaced by former Fairfax executive and journalist Greg Hywood, who joined the board in September and will run the company in an acting capacity.

Death and inquest
Hancock died at the age of 82 in the guesthouse of the Prix D'Amour, the palatial home he had built for his third wife, in March 1992. According to his daughter, the death was "unexpected" and came "despite strong will to live".[6]
An autopsy showed that he had died of heart disease, and police investigation revealed no evidence to contradict it. However, Hancock's daughter insisted that her stepmother had unnaturally hastened his death. Two successive state coroners refused to allow an inquest, but one was eventually granted in 1999 under the direction of State Attorney-General Peter Foss. Rose Porteous married for the fourth time less than three months later, marrying Hancock's long-time friend William Porteous on 25 June 1992. Rinehart was indignant at the haste with which her stepmother had remarried.
The inquest, when it finally came, was dominated by claims that Rose Porteous had literally nagged Hancock to death with shrill tantrums and arguments. Porteous denied the allegations, famously explaining: "For anyone else it would be a tantrum, for me it's just raising my voice."[12] In the last few days of Hancock's life, Porteous had attempted to pressure him into changing his will, and Hancock eventually took out a restraining order against her. The inquest was put on hold after allegations that Rinehart had paid witnesses to appear, and that some had lied in their testimony.[14] It resumed three months later with a smaller witness list, and ended with a finding that Hancock had died of natural causes and not as a result of Porteous' behaviour.

[edit] Legacy

His daughter Gina Rinehart continues to chair Hancock Prospecting and its expansion into mining projects continues unabated in Western Australia and other state of Australia. She is now holding the spot of Australia's richest person, as named by Forbes Asia in 2011, with a net worth of A$9bn.

A Rose By Any Other Name...

As the dust settled in Perth's Langley Park earlier this week and the billionaire's protesting over  a new mining tax were safely ensconced in their limos, our thoughts wandered to the whereabouts of the wondrous Rose Hancock Porteous , Perth socialite who thrilled and delighted a nation when as a humble maid for the late mining magnate Lang Hancock, she married  the ailing tycoon when he was 74 and she 38.

Rose, in a city that was not easy to shock with the antics of an Alan Bond who first snared a nation by winning the prestige America's Cup in 1983 outraging the conservative New York Yacht Club that had held the trophy since 1851, and then snared tens of thousands of investors in dud schemes, or a Laurie Connell who launched a merchant bank with a few hundred million dollars borrowed from the state government which all disappeared in a puff of smoke, Rose Hancock was breath of fresh air edging out Bond's wife "Big Red" Eileen as the western city's major society queen.

Rose & Lang
Rose and Lang built a love nest for themselves-Prix L'Amour, a 50 room gala palace overlooking the Swan River and in the upper class Perth suburb of Peppermint Grove where champagne and caviar parties  abounded and swells from all over the country, bussed in on Rose's private jet, danced the  night away-whilst Lang languished upstairs in an oxygen tent.

Lang's daughter Gina Rinehart from a previous marriage never saw eye to eye with Rose and bitter legal fights followed Hancock's death and stories of dodgy wills abounded and there were tales of Lang being poisoned and so on.

Prix L'Amour
But Rose got Prix L'Amour and a tidy sum  and married a real estate agent William Porteous 3 months after Lang's death and together they razed Prix L'Amour to the ground, sold off blocks of the land for tens of millions and built themselves their own smaller love nest in it's place. Drug charges followed and court battles over legal fees but our Rose survived it all.

Now news comes that Rose has had a stroke and is recovering at home. Her facebook page has remained strangely silent with the last post being on the Dec 9th 2009 saying "So many lovely fans!". The previous one on May 17th she says "oh I still love my Willie!", presumably referring to husband William who is caring for Rose at home.

The Shuttle encountered Rose a few times when she travelled to Sydney. The first was at the premier of the FoxTel cable TV show "Beauty and The Beast" where she was a panelist along with others like Ita Buttrose and  the One Nation politician Pauline Hanson. Hanson made a derogatory comment about Asians at which point Rose stood up and swore at Hanson in Filipino and stormed out, clambered into a Roller and tore off in a cloud of dust!

Now we've uncovered a wonderful video of Rose on youtube as she castigates her staff while getting ready for one her legendary lunch parties. Enjoy-

She was born in Silay City, Negros Occidental, Philippines, the daughter of Nicolas Lacson and Amparo Lacson. Her grandfather, General Aniceto Lacson, was a prominent military figure in Negros Occidental during the Philippine Revolution while her uncle, Arsenio Lacson, was the first elected mayor of Manila.[1]

[edit] Lang Hancock

Porteous herself rose to prominence in the 1990s as the central figure in a series of lawsuits launched by her stepdaughter, Gina Rinehart, the daughter of Porteous's late husband, Australian iron ore pioneer, Lang Hancock. Porteous worked as a maid for Hancock, who became her third husband.
Not long after Hancock's death, his widow married her current husband, William Porteous, a Perth real estate agent. Gina Rinehart's lawsuits accused Rose Porteous of marrying Hancock only for his fortune and alleged that her stepmother's actions had contributed to her father's death.
Rose Porteous' brushes with the law include matters relating to insurance fraud and prescription fraud. In October 2005 it was reported that Porteous was being sued for $14 million by Melbourne-based law firm Slater & Gordon for legal fees they claimed she owed for representing her in Rinehart's lawsuits and eventually came to a settlement of $12.5 million.[2]
After a brief stint in the tabloid media, Rose Porteous retreated to a quieter life in Perth and is regarded as a recluse by the locals, although she still occasionally appears on lifestyle programs for television.
In late March 2006, her Perth mansion "Prix d'Amour" was demolished, after being taken off the market. The mansion Rose and Lang Hancock created was an architectural spectacle featuring French doors and windows, parquetry and marble floors and wrought iron. The estate, set on 8100 square meters features the main house, two guest houses, a tennis court and two swimming pools. Then the 'superblock' was subdivided into ten approx. 800 sqm lots (each with maximised views) which were put on the market for around $5 mil. Then in 2008/9 two of these blocks were resold during Perth's 'recession' for a handsome $6,500,000. Each of these blocks have recently been valued at around $7,000,000 each, mostly due to the fact that they are one tenth of the former Prix D'Amour site.

[edit] Current

The socialite has been reported as seriously ill and has suffered a recent stroke. She is recovering in the exclusive Perth suburb of Peppermint Grove while she builds her new mansion on two lots of the Prix D'Amour development in Mosman Park, Perth.

Disaster Strikes In Red Cross Backyard

Charity Fails To Get A Grip On Criminal Scandals At Local Chapters

  •  (CBS/AP)

(CBS)  In part one of her report on the American Red Cross, CBS News Correspondent Sharyl Attkisson looks at how the charity is responding to its biggest criminal scandal.

The American Red Cross may be expert at responding to public disasters, but for years it has failed to get a grip on financial disasters at its local chapters.

There's the fundraiser in Louisiana caught padding her own bank account with donations, the manager in Pennsylvania who embezzled to support her crack cocaine habit and the executive in Maryland who forged signatures on purchase orders meant for disaster victims, to name a few.

But the biggest criminal scandal inside the Red Cross surfaced in New Jersey last year. And though it's been kept off the front pages, it ranks among the biggest charity frauds ever.

At the center of the scandal is Joseph Lecowitch, chief executive of the Hudson County Chapter, and his bookkeeper Catalina Escoto.

Escoto allegedly gave herself at least $75,000 in bonuses. All told, prosecutors say the duo stole well over $1 million in Red Cross funds, squandering it on gambling and each other. Escoto pleaded not guilty. Lecowitch died after he was indicted.

"The bookkeeping methods of Mr. Lecowitch and Ms. Escoto leave a lot to be desired," says prosecutor Michael D'Andrea.

The New Jersey fiasco, in which donations and government grants were all stolen, happened right under the nose of Red Cross headquarters. Critics say the reason the Red Cross has so little control over its chapters is that the chapters are pulling the strings: they collect most of the donations, dominate the national board and resist tighter controls by headquarters.

In 1999, Dr. Bernadine Healy was chosen to head the organization. Said to be stunned by what she saw as a cavalier attitude in New Jersey, she wrote a scathing confidential memo to the Red Cross audit committee.

No, Bill Clinton Didn't Balance the Budget

by Stephen Moore

This article appeared on on October 8, 1998. cato.org

Let us establish one point definitively: Bill Clinton didn't balance the budget. Yes, he was there when it happened. But the record shows that was about the extent of his contribution.
Many in the media have flubbed this story. The New York Times on October 1st said, "Clinton balances the budget." Others have praised George Bush. Political analyst Bill Schneider declared on CNN that Bush is one of "the real heroes" for his willingness to raise taxes -- and never mind read my lips. (Once upon a time, lying was something that was considered wrong in Washington, but under the last two presidents our standards have dropped.) In any case, crediting George Bush for the end of the deficit requires some nifty logical somersaults, since the deficit hit its Mount Everest peak of $290 billion in St. George's last year in office.
And 1993 -- the year of the giant Clinton tax hike -- was not the turning point in the deficit wars, either. In fact, in 1995, two years after that tax hike, the budget baseline submitted by the president's own Office of Management and Budget and the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicted $200 billion deficits for as far as the eye could see. The figure shows the Clinton deficit baseline. What changed this bleak outlook?

Media Moguls on BoardMurdoch, Malone and the Cato InstituteBy Norman Solomon
Last fall, when News Corporation owner Rupert Murdoch joined the board of directors at the Cato Institute, the announcement went unreported in major media. Perhaps it seemed routine for one of the world's most powerful media moguls to take a leadership post at one of the most influential think tanks in Washington.

At future meetings, Murdoch can count on rubbing elbows with his fellow media titan, John C. Malone--president and CEO of Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI), the largest U.S. cable operator--who has been on the Cato board since 1995. The two men are well acquainted, and their companies have long been intertwined in media deals involving satellite television, cable TV, program distribution and other big telecommunications ventures. Now the heads of both firms are formally helping to run a think tank which boasts that it has "actively promoted the deregulation of the television and telephone industries."

Excerpt:
Liberty Media executive John C. Malone is a hard-line conservative and Republican supporter who also sits on the Board of Directors of the Cato Institute which is little more than a public relations firm for the Koch brothers. It is no accident that Malone’s company is one of the parent companies of the Learning Channel that carries Palin’s Alaska reality show.
