A British spy who was found dead in the bath of a flat in London was stabbed several times before his body was stuffed into a sports bag where it lay decomposing for up to two weeks.

The Government Communications Headquarters in Cheltenham is Britain’s last great secret. Now it is in the focus of intense speculation among its stunned staff. Never before has one of their own been murdered. In GCHQ’s cafés, the seating area around the lawn at the core of the doughnut-shaped building and behind anonymous doors simply marked “No admission”, the same question continues to be asked: who murdered Gareth Williams – and why?

Iain Lobban, director of the UK Government's Communications Headquarters (better known as GCHQ), is making the headlines today after he spoke about the threat posed by internet attacks from cybercriminals and hostile nations.
BBC article about GCHQ chief
British government departments receive more than 20,000 malicious emails every month, with 1,000 per month believed to be specifically targeted against government networks, Mr Lobban told the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
Mr Lobban's speech comes in the run-up to British government cutbacks expected to be announced next week. Earlier today, senior RAF officers were reported to be warning that the UK would be unable to defend its airspace if defence cuts were made.
Mr Lobban acknowledged that different parties would be jostling for position, protecting their interests, but emphasised the need for internet security:
"Clearly they will also be deciding how they trade off against other spending priorities... Just because I, as a national security official, am giving a speech about cyber, I don't want you to take away the impression that it is solely a national security or defence issue. It goes to the heart of our economic well-being and national interest."
It's interesting to see one of our key intelligence agencies talking relatively openly about the threats government departments face from the internet on a daily basis.
To Mr Lobban's credit, he also made a point which many more excitable members of the media would be wise to hear, pointing out that it was "very, very hard" to tell which state might be behind an attack.
Hear hear.

Gareth Williams And Gudrun Loftus Murdered To Avoid Their Becoming More George Blakes

Excerpt:

Twenty years ago, it would have been inconceivable for Gareth Williams, the man found murdered in a London flat this week, to have been so readily identified as a GCHQ worker on secondment to MI6 – and certainly not before the police had established the motive for his gruesome demise. Nor would it have been disclosed that GCHQ workers in London live in a network of Pimlico flats registered to a shadowy offshore front company. And why were a mobile phone and numerous SIM cards laid out on a table near the murder scene? There are some in Whitehall who are irritated that this information has come out before they can establish exactly what occurred.

Willaims could not abide by the idea that he was serving HMG when it was just trying to keep the Cold War going, like it had been doing for centuries in Wales. Skripal received $100,000 for his efforts, far more than Williams was being paid. The retired Colonel's spying could have played an important role in the sinking of the Kursk in 2001 by the USS Toledo - an operation that the Royal Navy's submarine Splendid was apparently involved in.(5) Skripal was arrested in December 2004, and convicted in 2006, sentenced to thirteen years in prison, setting his release for 2017 for time already served. Little wonder that Skripal's exposure set off alarm bells in Whitehall, causing a raft of rumors about who had exposed him. Former MI6 double agent Oleg Gordievsky was left asking if Britain had another George Blake on its hands.(6)

Wikileaks and US Intelligence Computers

1) Wikileaks founder worked on U.S. intelligence computer espionage system in 1990s
By Wayne Madsen
Wikileaks founder Julian Assange was not always considered a pariah by the U.S. intelligence community. In fact, according to a knowledgeable source who once worked on sophisticated computer security programs for the U.S. intelligence community at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Assange helped develop, at the time, a state-of-the-art computer surveillance tool for use by the U.S. intelligence community, one that ended up being used by the National Security Agency and CIA.
Assange, according to our source, performed his technical work at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, where the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) conducted computer surveillance work in a relatively unclassified setting as compared to the NSA.
Assange's "deal" with the U.S. government at Sandia reportedly occurred in the early 1990s after his arrest by Australian police for breaking into U.S. Defense Department computers.
Hackers as spies

2) Koch, or "Hagbard," was found burned to death with gasoline in a forest near Celle, West Germany in 1989. Police ruled the death a suicide.
In October 1998, another Chaos hacker, Boris Floriciz, aka "Tron," was found hanging in a Berlin park. After treating the death as a suicide, police began to treat the death as a homicide after Stern magazine reported that Floriciz had been working for unsavory elements. Floriciz's father reported that his son had been approached by intelligence agents who wanted the hacker to work for them.
In August 2001, Herwart Holland-Moritz, aka "Wau Holland," one of the founders of Chaos, died at age 49 in Hamburg. Holland died after suffering a stroke. In 1987, Holland claimed that Chaos had obtained sensitive data on U.S. weapons systems from NASA VAX 11/785 computers linked to the Space Physics Analysis Network or SPAN.

Karl Werner Lothar Koch (July 22, 1965 – ca. May 23, 1989) was a German hacker in the 1980s, who called himself "hagbard", after Hagbard Celine. He was involved in a Cold War computer espionage incident.

[edit] Biography

Koch was born in Hanover. As his moniker would suggest, he was heavily influenced by The Illuminatus! Trilogy by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea. Besides adopting his pseudonym from a character in the book, he also named his computer "FUCKUP" ("First Universal Cybernetic-Kinetic Ultra-Micro Programmer"), after a computer designed and built by that character. He was addicted to cocaine and became extremely paranoid, convinced he was fighting the Illuminati like his literary namesake.
Koch was loosely affiliated with the CCC. He worked with the hackers known as DOB (Dirk-Otto Brezinski), Pengo (Hans Heinrich Hübner), and Urmel (Markus Hess), and was involved in selling hacked information from US military computers to the KGB. Eventually he and Pengo came forward and confessed to the authorities.[1]
Koch was found burned to death with gasoline in a forest near Celle. The death was generally considered a suicide.[2][3]

[edit] Movies

A German movie about his life, entitled 23, was released in 1998. While the film was critically acclaimed, it has been harshly criticized as exploitative by real-life witnesses. A corrective to the film's take is the documentation written by his friends.[4]
In 1990 a documentary was released titled "The KGB, The Computer and Me"

Excerpt:
Herwart Holland-Moritz, known as Wau Holland, (20 December 1951 - 29 July 2001) cofounded the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) in 1981, one of the world's oldest hacking clubs. The CCC became world famous when its members exposed security flaws in Germany's "Bildschirmtext" (Btx) online television service by getting a bank to send them DM 134,000 (approx. Euro 68.513) for accessing its Btx page many times. They returned the money the following day.
Holland also co-founded the CCC's hacker magazine Datenschleuder in 1984, which praised the possibilities of global information networks and powerful computers, and included detailed wiring diagrams for building your own modems cheaply. The then-monopolist phone company of Germany's Deutsche Bundespost had to approve modems and sold expensive, slow modems of their own. The telecommunications branch of Deutsche Bundespost was privatized and is now Deutsche Telekom.
Because of Holland's continuing participation in the club, the CCC gained popularity and credibility. He gave speeches on information control for the government and the private sector. Holland fought against copy protection and all forms of censorship and for an open information infrastructure. He compared the censorship demands by some governments to those of the Christian church in the Middle Ages and regarded copy protection as a product defect. In his last years, he spent a lot of his time in a youth center teaching children both the ethics and the science of hacking[1], with unique style and intelligent humor.
Holland was an amateur radio operator and held the callsign DB4FA.[2]
Holland died in Bielefeld on 29 July 2001 of complications caused by a brain stem stroke from which he suffered in May.[1]

Briton Gary McKinnon is accused of carrying out the biggest ever U.S. military hacking operation.
Gary McKinnon, the hacker who broke into Pentagon and NASA computers, was at risk of suicide Friday after losing an effort to fight extradition to the United States, his attorney said.
"This is the wholesale destruction and bullying of a small individual by the United States and now our own government," attorney Karen Todner said in a statement.
McKinnon's mother Janis Sharp described her son as "suicidal."
The British government did not respond.
